ECLS offers help and academic support to practicing lawyers and law students enrolling and studying in law programmes at the University of London.

The ECLS mission is to prepare specialists of a new type who would work in the global economy within not only national jurisdictions but also a number of jurisdictions of common law and mixed law from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, or Singapore to the USA, the UK, Canada, Cyprus, India, or the Republic of South Africa.

A wish to become a practicing lawyer in the common law jurisdictions is not the only reason to obtain a law qualification from the University of London with the help of ECLS. You might be working already in finance, IT, global commerce, intellectual property and venture capital, design, or advertising. In all those cases a law degree from the University of London will stimulate your professional growth and increase career options.

With more than 15 years of cooperation with the University of London, the ECLS team helps lawyers and law students from Baltic countries, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan to succeed in studying and passing external UoL exams to earn the Qualifying Law Degree – Bachelor of Laws University of London.

The ECLS team offers full academic support throughout your study at the University of London including support for admission, personal counseling, going over homework, and distribution of supplementary learning materials. ECLS tutors and teachers will answer your questions and make your study at the University of London more accessible and efficient.

The programmes are certified by the University of London which administers and grades the exams.

English legal system

Training programme for professionals and students to work on cross-border economic projects as well as with common law jurisdictions.

Programme provides:

  • a comprehensive idea of the common (English) law jurisdiction
  • knowledge and use of new academic standards
  • conceptual study of legal English
  • training of all language skills

LLB Degree
University of London

A degree in law that can become a big step in a career in the global economy and international companies. LLB UoL makes the way towards professional qualification significantly shorter and easier for lawyers working in countries with common law or mixed law.

The programme exists in two variants:

  • Standard Entry Route: The programme consists of 12 modules (subjects) that the student studies over 4 years, taking 3 exams a year.
  • Graduate Entry Route: The programme consists of 9 modules that the student studies over 3 years depending on the pace of studying they choose (exams in 2/3 modules each year).

Graduate Diploma in Commercial law

A professional development course in English law from the University of London, available to those who already have a higher education degree. 

GDCL covers 4 modules that can be completed over a period of 1 to 5 years if the exams are taken in 1 or 2 modules a year.

LLB Degree UoL 

is a basic legal education that opens the way to professional law practice in the common law jurisdiction. High school graduates, students, and working professionals can participate in the programme. The standard period of study is 3 to 6 years.

Graduate Diploma in Commercial 

law gives an opportunity to receive deeper expert knowledge in English law. The programme is available to postgraduates only. Lawyers from other jurisdictions often take this course. The standard period of study is 1 to 5 years.

Introduction to English Legal system

Adam Gearey is Professor of Law at Birkbeck College, University Of London. He is author of, most recently, Lives That Slide Out of View: Poverty Law and Legal Activism (Routledge, 2018), 'Ditches' in Goodrich et al (eds), Research Handbook in Law and Literature (Elgar, 2022), and “The More He Argued, The More Technical He Became”, Surplus Value in the Law of Trusts, in Critical Trusts Law, eds Piska and Gibson (Oxford: Counterpress, 2022). He has taught jurisprudence and legal theory for the International Programme of the University of London for a number of years.

The University of London is one of the leading global universities. Its high academic standards are internationally recognized. Founded in 1836, it includes 18 world-famous colleges and many research institutes. Among the alumni there are seven Nobel laureates, politicians, judges, writers, scholars, and chief executives.

The University of London Law Consortium is responsible for the laws programmes. It consists of six renowned colleges: UCL, Queen Mary, Birkbeck, Kings, LSE, and SOAS. The law schools or departments of these Сolleges actually design and develop the University of London Undergraduate Laws programme LLB that has a well-earned international reputation as the golden standard of legal education in common law countries.

Getting an internationally recognised law degree opens new perspectives of professional work in global economy. Our programmes can be of interest for high school graduates aiming to develop their careers abroad as well as for practicing lawyers who want to deepen their knowledge in the area of English law.

The academic year lasts from mid-October to April inclusive. May is a period of exams administered by the University of London.

In ECLS, students who entered remote law programmes of the University of London get sound academic support along all the modules from experienced and highly qualified teachers from England. All the exams are taken in writing in the student’s country, in local exam centers. The University of London administers and grades the exams, and issues all the higher education documents.

To begin your studying, you need to register with the University of London as a student, and, using your login and password, get access to all the resources and learning materials necessary for the course. Access to the ECSL distance learning system can be obtained through personal login and password too.

All the learning materials and teaching are in English.

Recommended learning intensity is 3 modules per year. If you plan to complete 3 modules, you’ll have to spend studying at least 15 hours per week.

If you work, or study simultaneously, or have other commitments, we do not recommend taking more than 3 modules per year due to a high risk of failing at exams.

Upon finishing another module, students take a 3-hours written exam in local exam centers in their countries. Two independent examiners in London mark the students’scripts. Grades are awarded on a 100-point scale by the University of London Examination board.

The LLB program is available for high school graduates (after 12 years of studying) and university students (as additional education). It also suits professionals who need knowledge in common law jurisdiction due to various reasons.

Graduate Diploma in Commercial Law programme is only available for professionals with higher education degree.

LLB is a basic legal education that opens a perspective for professional work as a lawyer in a common law jurisdiction, while LLM implies obtaining advanced knowledge in a particular area of a common law jurisdiction.
